The Everyday Kind

Flicking through my wardrobe but all my clothes are dirty
I left my fashion sense behind when I was thirteen
I really hope she don't mind that I'm looking like a mess
It'll be too much if I dress to impress
Met her at a gig a mate of mine was playing
It was loud dark and dusty I couldn't hear what she was saying
I knew she was a friend of a friend I'd seen her before
And everytime we spoke she always left me craving more
I don't wanna get sober yet
In a haze ever since we met
Is it the cider or the cigarettes
I'm struck by the thought of you
I sent her a link to my music
Why the hell did I do that
It's so embarrassing man I always act like a prat
She didn't mind though, she said it was alright
And asked if I fancied a drink then tomorrow night
Now we're crammed in the corner of a sunken old bar
The walls ooze with crimson and everything is far away
What if I run out of things I wanna say
There's only so many words and only so many ways they fit together
Maybe we fit together you and I
Or maybe you'll just be another fleeting passerby
Either way we'll both be crawling ‘round these concrete bends
So why don't we just take a gamble where this story ends
Chorus repeats
Drank so much I hardly remember
But I do know my chest got tighter
Every time I saw your face
Every time I saw your grace
The everyday kind that lifts you out of this place to a better one
I couldn't describe in a hundred songs
The way I clambered home giddy and foolish and eager
I'll be exactly the same next time I see her
I don't wanna get sober yet
In a haze ever since we met
Is it the cider or the cigarettes
I'm struck by the thought of you
I don't wanna get sober yet
In a haze ever since we met
Is it the cider or the cigarettes
I'm struck by the thought of you

Wild Mountain Thyme

V1:
The student bar, a wonderful web of contradictions
Where bright eyes and tired lips spin their own fictions
That's where we met in the depths of last night,
On a hazy rubble of spilt beer and vivid light
You laughed when I wrote that down in my notes app
‘Cos no one talks like that I need to strip it back
Now you thought I was just another pretentious writer
And I thought you were just another naive fighter
We grinned giddily ‘cos we both knew we were so see-through
But there was something so forgiving ‘bout the look of you
So I spent the night in your garden made of stone
And we watched the sprawling city crackle and moan
Chorus:
Will you go, lassie go
And we’ll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie go
V2:
Now look there at the end of your garden in between the stones
See that skinny plant as it struggles on its own
Well the shape of it reminds me of my much younger days
Clambering over earth to watch the sticky stems sway
So I wonder over, and feel that sweet scent of wild thyme
Wrap itself around my chest, try my best not to laugh at this sight
So far in to city lines
You catch my silly gaze and pour out another wine
Chorus:
Will you go, lassie go
And we’ll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie go
Bridge:
Even three feet of concrete
On thick streets of donner meat
Couldn't stop the wild weeds sprouting up
I pray I never forget
The taste and the touch
Of the beautiful things
Growing around us
(x2)
Chorus (vox+piano):
Will you go, lassie go
And we’ll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the blooming heather
Will you go, lassie go
Outro:
Ad-libs and violin

I Forgive Us All Bro

One day I decided I was a man
I threw away my toys and tried
My best to understand manly things
Like how to hold in tears
And how to push back all of your fears
Behind your gritted teeth
We were little soldiers who
Wouldnt dare make a sound
We were laughing clowns
With eyes darting around
Desperate not to be found
I thought i had every single answer
But couldn't tell my I loved her
Until she got cancer
It's such a cruel comedy
What a twisted world
I could objectify girls before
I could even speak properly
Even now I can’t talk openly
With the people closest to me
Kill two birds with one stone
Watch the two of us falling down
Your silence suffocates me and
We’ll both drown
Kill two birds with one stone
Watch the two of us falling down
Your silence suffocates me and
We’ll both drown
I choked on the words I never spoke
‘Till I could barely breathe
Just so you'd see me as a man
Other boys like me
Swallowed too many tears
Until their fears rotted into rage
Meanwhile the girls were
Looking both ways
Over their shoulders
Clutching keys as the sunset
Building a street-wise mindset
Wondering where all their time went
We fell into that same dichotomy
Just like our parents had
You know if you cry
You ain’t one of the lads
Kill two birds with one stone
Watch the two of us falling down
Your silence suffocates me and
We’ll both drown
Kill two birds with one stone
Watch the two of us falling down
Your silence suffocates me and
We’ll both drown

The day the school burned down
Was the day I turned 21
Far too late to bring me joy
But it felt like I had won
So I went to see the remnants
Stared cooly like a boy
And saw with my own eyes
Schools could actually be destroyed
The policeman looked at me sternly
And he told me he was appalled
I said nothing, as the rain
Turned the ash to thick gruel
I thought of you
And of everything that we’d been
And I was so glad that it could
Never be seen
Dropped my juice on the floor
When the school burned down
Not the same as before
When the school burned down
No need to settle the score
When the school burned down
There’s no shame anymore
After the school burned down
In my mind we were ten feet tall
Really we were barely 5’8
Spoke holy words between
Thatchers gold crates
We grew up far too quickly
Rolled our first spliffs at 13
And hid all of our thoughts behind
A white blank screen
A long perpetual winter
Of house parties and powder
Thought it would chase our ghosts away
It only did make them louder
We learnt to hide together
And learnt to lie together
But I'm ready to let all that go
I forgive us all bro
Dropped my juice on the floor
When the school burned down
Not the same as before
When the school burned down
No need to settle the score
When the school burned down
There’s no shame anymore
After the school burned down
Burn your school to the ground
Burn your office burn it down
Burn your school to the ground
Burn your office burn it down
Burn your school to the ground
Burn your office burn it down
Burn your school to the ground
Burn your office burn it down
I’m not who I was anymore
And I don't need to be
You’re not gonna hold me down
I set those memories free
Dropped my juice on the floor
When the school burned down
Not the same as before
When the school burned down
No need to settle the score
When the school burned down
There’s no shame anymore
After the school burned down
Dropped my juice on the floor
When the school burned down
Not the same as before
When the school burned down
No need to settle the score
When the school burned down
There’s no shame anymore
After the school burned down
The day the school burned down
Was the day I turned 21
Far too late to bring me joy
But it felt like I had won
And truth be told
What will be will be
But when they find the kid who did it
They'll find me
