about

With this song we tell the story of Ben Taylor, a kid who never left home and remains frozen in time. Musically, it’s a vibrant, bursting fusion of folk, hip-hop, afro-beat and indie.

We have a totally unique, fresh and upbeat sound, that we use to tell stories of modern life and the people we meet! Often compared to The Streets (but jazzier).

We have exciting plans to promote this song, in both digital and traditional media, with the help of some very distinctive animations that bring it all to life. We’ve a rapidly growing fanbase in Yorkshire, and have multiple sold-out shows in Leeds (currently postponed due to the pandemic).

We hope you enjoy this song, thanks a lot for your time! If you need any more info please get in touch via theowakeling@gmail.com, or call 07443510932.

*PLEASE NOTE* this song is not released until the 30th of January, and as a result the audio cannot be shared in any form before that date. If you'd like to discuss the possibility of a premiere, please contact us.

*Quality is slightly compromised in this upload - high quality audio will be avaliable upon release*

lyrics

V1:
Every time I go back home
I see Ben Taylor on his own
In shrunken shorts with a battered football
Kicking it softly against a wall.
He’s exactly how we left him
Back when we all finished school
I don’t really know what kept him
But he hasn’t changed at all.

Pre-Chorus:
I wonder what he’s looking for,
If I were him, I’d want much more.

Chorus:
He never left that town,
He’s only messin’ around,
But when he thinks about change it seems
He’s stuck in a dream,
He’s just dreaming.

V2:
I left him behind once we became teens,
I liked music but he didn’t seem
To care at all for anything other
Than kickabouts in sight of his mother.
It’s like she caged him in
With mashed potato and Sunday church,
Every single time I visit home
It seems to be getting worse.

Chorus repeat.

V3:
When the rest of us when out,
Searching for alcohol and love,
Ben was sat on the wall outside
His house, blankly staring above,
Up at those skies he spent
His whole life sat beneath,
Robbing himself of memories
Like a funny kind of thief.
I was so glad that I wasn’t like him
And it wasn’t that I disliked him
It was just that I was so frightened
Of being left behind just like him,
But these days when I’m heading home
And I spot him out the window of
The bus, I think to myself damn,
Maybe he’s got it all,
The worries here are just so small,
So perhaps he isn’t such a fool
To spend his time kicking that
Football softly against his wall.

Pre-Chorus and Chorus repeat.

Bridge:
All the times that I feel like a failure,
Well, I really wanna be Ben Taylor,
All the times I might need a saviour,
Well, I think it could be Ben Taylor,
All the times I see myself,
Looking just like a stock on the shelf,
It makes me want to grab a football,
And kick it softly against the wall.
